Black Women & Headwraps

      Hey Curlies,

Happy Black History Month! I'm excited for this month it is also my birthday month and Vday. Tonight's Natural Divinity Products Blogspot Topic is to honor and celebrate Black History Month. Tonight's topic is Black Women & Headwraps. A lot of women wear headwraps and it is a go to for curly head girls. We want our hair protected or maybe we are securing our hair for a "take down" style. What ever reason why Black Women use headwraps is their own preference and prerogative. In the 1700's Black enslaved women were forced to wear headwraps. It also has been said that slave owners wanted Black women to wear headwraps so that they look less promiscuous to white people.  Headwraps during that time were seen as a subservience. During the 1700's in Louisiana the Governor passed a law that required black women to wear their hair in a bandana. The symbolism of headwraps changed from oppression to unique fashion. After slavery was abolished the symbolism of headwraps turned for the worse. The racial image of "Black Mammy" (pictured below) showed a Black woman with a headwrap and over exaggerating features. This image created stereotypes that Black women were only since as "the help" and nannies. It reminded Black women of their horrible past trauma of slavery.

Now Black women find wearing headwraps very liberating. In African culture the headwrap is elegant and worn at sophisticated events. Headwraps are worn by spiritual Black women to present intellectualism, intuition, and divinity. Spiritually headwraps symbolize modesty, energy protection, and devotion to practice. Whether Black women wear headwraps for a quick run to the store or to a professional meeting it is their choice to do as they please.

I personally love the headwraps and wear them whenever I can. I want to HEAR from YOU! How do you feel about wearing headwraps? Please check out this Naturalista that brought fabric from JoAnns to create affordable headwraps:
